Our Work is Guided by R.E.A.L. Principles
Respect Dignity
We recognize all living and nonliving beings radiate beauty and need each other to fully thrive. Respecting dignity requires continuously learning from each being (i.e., humans, creatures, plants, water, air and earth) and sharing resources so that each can thrive.
Equalize Power
We recognize every being has insights, skills, and needs. Equalizing power requires individuals to have decision-making power and access to all relevant information. Given current inequalities, equalizing power also requires empowering the powerless, centering the marginalized, and dismantling existing structural inequities.
Adjust Missteps
We recognize that anyone can reinforce existing hierarchies, injustices, and pain even when attempting to dismantle them. Adjusting missteps requires learning how positions, decisions, and actions are influencing others, making amends for harm caused, altering future behavior, and assessing whether the new actions reduce the experienced harm.
Lead Change
We recognize an individual’s imagination and options are shaped by societal ideologies and processes. Leading change requires altering societal standards to reflect shared values even when the outcome is uncertain.
